What’s Art got to do with climate change? To coincide with Global Climate Change Week, the School
Event Details
To coincide with Global Climate Change Week, the School of Creative Arts and Media at the University of Tasmania invites you to a discussion and reconciling of a simple yet complex question: What’s Art got to do with climate change?
The evidence is clear. The world is rapidly changing. The climate is rapidly changing. Urgent action is needed. Collectively we are witnessing devastating fires, drought, loss of biodiversity and damaged ecosystems, rising sea levels and displaced people … The list is long. The issues faced are complex and contested. And no one is immune to this change.
Join academic staff members Martin Walch, Jan Hogan, Toby Juliff and Niklavs Rubenis as they present case studies of their individual practices and how their work negotiates concerns of a changing climate and the conundrums of a world under rapid transformation.
This is an online event open to the general public.
SPEAKERS
Dr. Martin Walch works across a range of media including photography, video, computer programming and data visualisation. His artwork primarily concerns itself with the representation of environmental change, and the mapping of interactions between people and the more-than-human environments within which they live, work and recreate. From 2011-2017 he was involved in a major collaboration on The Derwent Project with photographer David Stephenson, which secured Australian Research Council Discovery Project funding from 2014-2016. In 2017, Martin was an Australian Antarctic Arts Fellow and stationed at Mawson Station in Eastern Antarctica. Martin has received multiple awards, has been widely collected by major institutions and currently coordinates the Photography program at the School of Creative Arts, University of Tasmania.
Dr. Jan Hogan, through practice-led research, explores the traces left in the land of past events intertwining deep geological time with historical events and the present moment. Jan has lived and worked in many remote areas of Australia, which has had a profound impact on her practice-led research. Her work is held in major galleries around Australia including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of NSW and Artbank. Jan is the Head of Discipline (Art) and the coordinator of Printmaking & Drawing at the School of Creative Arts and Media, University of Tasmania.
Dr. Toby Juliff is an art historian, curator, writer, and sometimes artist. He has worked across the interface of history, theory, and practice for over a decade. Publishing widely on subjects such as British and Australian sculpture, participatory art, and performance, Toby’s work explores the rich history of cultural exchange and how we might better understand the global transmission of ideas. Toby is a Lecturer in Critical Practices and the coordinator of the Honours and Masters programs at the School of Creative Arts and Media, University of Tasmania.
Dr. Niklavs Rubenis is a designer and maker focused on waste and design ethics. He has been involved with projects spanning community, non-profit, commercial and cultural institutions, and has had work presented and exhibited nationally and internationally. Select collaborative funded projects include Object Realities, Transformative Repair, Object Therapy and Crafting Waste. Niklavs has a trade in cabinet making, holds a BA Visual Arts (Honours), and a PhD from the Australian National University. He is currently serving as a board member of the World Crafts Council—Australia; is on the coordinating committee of Global Climate Change Week; and coordinates Object and Furniture at the School of Creative Arts & Media, University of Tasmania.

Event Details
We are thrilled to partner with publisher HarperCollins for this exclusive online event celebrating the release of Killing Time, a collection of non-fiction short stories by rock legend turned writer, Jimmy Barnes. He will be joined in conversation by the author and creator of TV show Offspring, Debra Oswald.
We look forward to seeing you in the event.
Order your signed copy of Killing Time here. (Signed copies limited, order now to avoid disappointment)
ABOUT THE BOOK
Outrageous, witty, warm and wise, Killing Time shares more than forty yarns reflecting an epic life – from an encounter with a soul legend in Memphis, a night in a haunted studio in upstate New York, and a doomed haircut in Thailand to a madcap misunderstanding in a Japanese ski resort, a family feud on a remote coral atoll, and an all-too-revealing appearance for a Sydney charity.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Jimmy Barnes is a Scottish-born rock singer-songwriter who grew up in Adelaide. His career, both as a solo performer and as the lead vocalist of the legendary band Cold Chisel, has made him one of the most successful and distinctive artists in Australian music history. A prolific songwriter and performer, Jimmy has been a storyteller for more than forty years, sharing his life and passions with Australians of all ages at over ten thousand gigs throughout his adopted homeland. In the process, he has amassed more number one albums in Australia than The Beatles: five with Cold Chisel and twelve as a solo artist, including the iconic For the Working Class Man. Across his career Jimmy has sold over 12 million albums and he has been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame twice. Jimmy’s childhood memoir, Working Class Boy, became a number one bestseller and won the Australian Book Industry Award (ABIA) for Biography of the Year in 2017. His sequel, Working Class Man, won him a second ABIA for Biography of the Year in 2018. He is the only author to win back-to-back ABIAs for a non-fiction title. Having sold more than 500,000 copies, the books have become Australian classics and established Jimmy as one of our finest storytellers. The Stories & Songs live production, based on the memoirs, sold out more than a hundred shows, attracted unanimous critical acclaim and inspired the documentary film Working Class Boy, which topped the box office in late 2018. Jimmy lives in New South Wales, with his wife, Jane.

The fourth industrial revolution is upon us: the increasing uptake of robotics and AI in many parts of our life. In some cases robots are replacing the work of humans but in others researchers are exploring ways that they complement and enhance our existence.
In the last Experimenta Social event of the year, we will hear from two artists who are ahead of this transformational curve having worked with robotics and AI in their artistic practices for many decades. Art is about communicating ideas, and these artists do groundbreaking work in the social robotics field; a branch of robotics research that emerged in the 1990’s and focuses on robotic systems that explicitly engage on a social level.
Through their interdisciplinary practice, Louis-Philippe Demers and Mari Velonaki bring a deep questioning approach to the rapid technological changes we are experiencing. Join us as we discuss robots as art – the promise and pitfalls of a world driven by robotics and AI.

Event Details
In 2017/18 Judith Lucy and Denise Scott toured their smash hit show ‘Disappointments’ to every capital city and regional centre in Australia selling more than 70,000 tickets.
The premise of the show was that their lives were perfect but the reality was that this was bullshit and both had taken to their beds because of personal and professional setbacks. Scotty and Jude sensed that talking about their mediocre lives and shattered dreams might strike a chord with the public and they were right! People loved embracing not just the comedians’ regrets but their own! Failure had never been this much fun!
Now thanks to the unravelling of the arts sector and, indeed, the planet due to COVID- 19 they feel the time is right for ‘Disappointments’, the zoom-cast! Before the pandemic it was just Scotty and Jude who’d taken to their beds to fall into a pit of self-loathing but thanks to isolation, the whole world has been forced to do the same thing. Talk about writing itself!
Join Scotty and Jude as they talk about NEW disappointments every Sunday at 5pm. Pour a wine or pop on the kettle and be part of this live event from the comfort of your lounge room. There will be chances to write in, zoom in and be part of a weekly virtual happening that promises to be at least as disappointing as the miserable bin fire that is humanity.
There will be 8 episodes of the Disappointments zoom-cast, with the first one airing on Sunday 2 August 5pm. You can purchase tickets episode to episode or watch all episodes with a Disappointments Season Pass.
Who knows when you’ll get to see these two in a theatre again so why not enjoy their desperation and this thinly veiled cry for help in the comfort of your own living room? Judith and Denise really can’t wait to disappoint you all over again!
TICKET PRICES
Disappointments Season Pass ($100) – If you’ d like a season pass to watch all 7 remaining episodes of Disappointments this is the ticket for you. With a season pass you can view all episodes with any group size you like within your household.
You’ll be sent a unique link to view each episode on the day it’s scheduled to air.
If you’d prefer to purchase a ticket for just one episode at a time you can book the next episode here.

Event Details
To mark our fifth anniversary, Deakin University’s Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) is hosting an online higher education research conference from 19 to 20 October 2020.
The conference aims to provide a focused forum for higher education research as a discipline. Cutting-edge conversations will centre around rigorous, high-quality conceptual and theoretical contributions exploring the future of higher education research in a postdigital age.
Our keynote speakers are Professor Monika Nerland (University of Oslo) and Associate Professor Alyssa Wise (New York University).
You can view our program here.
Registration options
There are two registration options for CRADLE Conference 2020:
- Whole conference registration; and
- Individual sessions.
All registrations are free.
Why register for the whole conference?
Registering for the whole conference provides you with access to all events, including research presentations and social events.
Please choose this option if you think you will attend at least three to four sessions at CRADLE Conference 2020. We strongly encourage attendance for at least two research presentation sessions if you’re selecting this option.
Please note, we have scheduled plenty of breaks between sessions and minimised presentation time to accommodate the online nature of the conference and reduce screen fatigue.
Why register for individual sessions?
Registrations for individual sessions allow you to register for any of our four main sessions:
- Day One: Opening session (11.00 am – 12.00 pm, Monday 19 October) – the conference welcome from Prof. Liz Johnson (DVCE, Deakin University) and Prof. David Boud (Director, CRADLE); and the first keynote, ‘The data-intensive university in a post-digital world: New directions in teaching and learning’, by A/Prof. Alyssa Wise (NYU).

This weekly event is for ukulele beginners who want to strum and sing in a relaxed and informal group setting. If you are new to musical instruments, this is a perfect opportunity to learn some practical skills quickly and in a supportive environment. We meet weekly so do check our website for the “Theme of the Week” and for any last-minute updates. Please note that there are usually no sessions during school holidays.
Typically, there are over 25 people at every session, and about one fifth are beginners. If you are a complete beginner, the most important part of the session is the first 20 minutes where I go through some basics. The session is free-of-charge, but there is a donation box if you want to contribute to our operational expenses. Thank you and hope to see you one day!
